60,000 bees removed from Florida home

The hungry insects had eaten a hole in the ceiling

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (CNN/WSVN) - One Florida house is much quieter now that tens of thousands of unwanted visitors have been removed from the attic.

A Hollywood couple watched in horror as exterminators removed some 60,000 bees from the ceiling of their home.

The hungry insects had eaten a hole in the ceiling, and made their way into the house's master bedroom. That's when the homeowners, who'd put up with the buzzing mess for two years, decided they'd had enough.

Crews pulled away the drywall from the ceiling, revealing a swarming system of honeycombs capable of producing 100 pounds of wax and honey.

Experts say bees only need about an eighth of an inch of space to make their way into a home. Once there, they can quickly get down to the business of reproducing, with Queen bees laying up to 3,000 eggs per day.
