10-year-old Barbara Temporale may be on summer vacation from school, but she is doing anything but lounging around the house. Since school got out in June, Barbara has been spending her precious summer moments helping others enjoy theirs.

According to the Food Research and Action Center, nearly 15% of Connecticut households did not have enough money to buy the food they needed in 2009. Barbara decided to put together a fundraiser to help raise food and money for two shelters near her home.

After several calls, Barbara was able to get firemen from Waterbury, police from Waterbury and Naugatuck, and EMS from Campion Ambulance to show up with their vehicles at the Touch a Truck fundraiser.

The day finally arrived, and although temperatures peaked over the 90 degree mark, people still came out to help out this 10-year-old achieve her goal.

People made donations and got a chance to walk around and see emergency vehicles up close.

By the end of the day, Barbara's efforts helped the Ecumenical Food Bank of Naugatuck as well as the St. Vincent DePaul Shelter in Waterbury. This is only the first of many efforts on Barbara's behalf.
